More than 4,000 people from 26 countries across all five inhabited continents came together as part of the WalkingRivers movement — united under one powerful message: rivers are amazing and deserve to be protected.
This year, 120 routes were registered along 111 rivers, each one brought to life by our incredible River Leaders. Some came from NGOs and government institutions, others from local citizen groups, and many were individuals walking with friends — all connected by a shared love for their rivers.
From community-led clean-ups to riverbank concerts and walks with school groups, this global celebration reminded us that every river has a story, and each person can help protect it.

WalkingRivers is a worldwide call to walk along your favorite river for at least 5-7km dressed in blue, to show that rivers are awesome and worth being taken care of. It is more than an event; it’s a movement to remind us of our shared responsibility to cherish and safeguard the waterbodies that unite us.
There is a route registration period where any person or organisation can register a walk along a river through the «Join the movement » We will also support you in the organization of the event through online workshops, tips and graphic material. Finally, on May 17th, simultaneous routes will take place along rivers across the world.
Small creeks or large rivers, pristine or deteriorated, urban or rural; any river is worth being walked along. Please select a river route that it is 5-7km long (or longer!), to fully experience the magic of rivers.
Some routes are private while others are open to the public. As routes start getting registered, they will be geo mapped on in this website. If a route is public, you will find there the contact info to reach the organizers and ask to join their route.

Two optional online meetings on 26th March and 23rd April to convey the spirit of the event and guide route leaders in organising their local events.
The day has come! We will connect the rivers of the world by walking. We will wear blue to identify with the global community.
Routes, photos, videos, testimonials, etc. will be collected and made available to let everyone know how cool rivers are!

Una manera maravillosa de conocer los ríos como ecosistemas vivos y no sólo como canales de agua. Nos hemos enamorado de ellos.
In a city where there is not a great interest in the environment, it is always wonderful to see how many very different people are attracted by the possibility of discovering the rivers under their homes.
Una experiencia fabulosa, lo repetiremos el año que viene!
Walking beside the Xarrama was about reconnecting with memory, with care, and with the quiet strength of community.
Para nós o WalkingRivers é um dia de partilha. De recolha de testemunhos e de sensibilização ambiental. Um dia agregador de todos os amantes das nossas linhas de água.
We spent our time immersed in nature, navigating the forest, locating its lakes, and discussing the historical significance of Delhi's sacred river. It was a unique way to connect with our environment and heritage.
Around 150 participants, including community leaders, women, and children, came together to join the river walk. We discussed the changing water flow and water level of the river, ending with a tree planting drive and pledges for environmental protection.
