Agreement between CIREF and Wetlands International – European Association for the LIFE-NGO project 2018, River Restoration Communication Campaign in the Iberian Peninsula

The Iberian Centre for River Restoration (CIREF) was created as a non-profit association, linked to the European Centre for River Restoration (ECRR). CIREF members come from public and private sectors, research, consultants and administration, and are experts on different river restoration fields of knowledge (ecologists, engineers, geographers, etc.).

In 2018, the following activities shall jointly be implemented by cooperation between Wetlands International – European Association and CIREF:

  1. Contributing to gather information on best practices of river restoration to achieve water policy objectives, by helping to collect structured on-the-ground evidence on WFD and FRMD implementation. The evidence will serve as input to the European Commission’s WFD and FRMD REFIT process.
  2. Development and publication of the first issue of an electronic journal on river restoration, including implications for river ecology and fish migration. This will include a technical note derived from the publication ‘Criteria for decision making towards the improvement of river connectivity and dam removal considering the impacts of invasive fish species in the Iberian Peninsula’ (drafted in 2017).
  3. Workshops: 1 technical workshop in Bragança (Portugal) on how to fund river restoration projects at local government level, and 1 technical workshop in Barcelona on river rehabilitation in urban locations.
  4. World Fish Migration Day: Organisation of a field trip to demonstrate field sampling protocols and a debate about the ecological importance of fish migration, using migratory and endemic fish as figureheads to promote river restoration.
