A group of professionals linked to river restoration in the Iberian Peninsula, coming from universities, authorities, private consultancies and non governmental organisations decided to promote the Iberian Centre for River Restoration (CIREF) with the aim of reverting the trend of degradation that these ecosystems undergo at present.
In November 2008, after celebrating in Madrid the seminar Ecological River Restoration in South European Countries, organised by ECRR, a provisional board was established with the assignment of initiating the procedure for obtaining the formal constitution of the association and disseminating as much as possible the creation of the Centre.
The 3th and 4th of June 2009, the Constitutional Assembly was celebrated in Barcelona, during which the definitive managing board was elected and the statutes of the association were discussed and approved.
